Janet Maslin New York Times Let's Spend the Night Together is the classiest of concert movies, even if that sounds as if it ought to be a contradiction in terms. Rated: 3.5/5 May 16, 2013 Full Review Time Out An account of three gigs, filmed during the Stones' 1981 American tour, that rarely strays beyond the confines of the vast stages. Oct 31, 2007 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times At the beginning of the film I was caught up in the Stones' waves of sound energy, and fascinated by Jagger's exhilarating, limitless onstage energy. By the end of the film I was simply stunned. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 31, 2007 Full Review Octavi Marti El Pais (Spain) There's no doubt that The Rolling Stones are the best rock band, but it is highly doubtful that there's something truly interesting about rock. Audience Member It was amazing watching this on big screen plus the stereo sound. Enjoyable for those who likes the Rolling Stones. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful review of all the old and upcoming hits of the day. A record breaking 1981 U.S. tour set in Arizona. Features 25 classic rock songs. Hal Ashby used 20 cameras and the latest (at that time) 24 track stereo. It was directed by [legendary] Hal Ashby, and released to cinemas in 1983. Some clips from the obviously sold out huge concert: www.youtube.com/watch?v=03kSrYn3T5M‎ www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YADLsz367Q The concert is ALL Mick ALL the time, naturally. The movie sprinkles in old black n white footage of performances by the band only briefly and occasionally, but never gets away from whats being played onstage. My main problem with this concert is the huge stage and seemingly uninvolved (or is it disinterested) band memebers other than crazy man Mick Jagger. He works up a sweat more than all the other band people involved. But thats the general way of the Stones... Mick sweats onstage and everyone else does not. Charlie Watts has a bald spot even in 1981! Mick wears an American football uniform most of the show Lots of cigarette smoking too by Keith Richards who lights up a new one constantly. The venues are PACKED. I mean, like thousands on thousands of people, some seem like miles away from the stage too. But not us. We are afforded great seats, with camera shots on stage almost always. The band doesn't play only their songs, but old tunes such as Going to A Go-Go. A wonderful retrospective for a band that has lasted 5 decades and still producing. It doesn't get much better than this. A delight for Mick fans especially. Arrial views of Sun Devil Stadium, U.S.A. There are other venues included on this tour as well, but most seem to come from Arizona. This performance is NOT like the much later ones like Steel Wheels Tour. There are NO inflatable dogs or honkey tonk women, gimmicks like factory settings and the like. This is just a big, really big stage in pastel colors. Some critics were disappointed such as Roger Ebert who wrote that Let's Spend the Night Together is "essentially a concert film - a film recording an ideal Rolling Stones concert, put together out of footage shot at several outdoor and indoor Stones concerts. If that's what you want, enjoy this movie. I wanted more." NOTES: 1 It was filmed at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey (5-6 November 1981) and THIS one at the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona (13 December 1981). More 'The Rolling Stones' Grammy-nominated concert film ... If you are a true LIVE Stones fan, you will adore this. running time: 93 minutes" IMBD NOTES about the film: 1 Let's Spend the Night Together is a live concert film, documenting The Rolling Stones' 1981 North American Tour. It was directed by Hal Ashby, and released to cinemas in 1982, then subsequently released on VHS. 2 The film was released as "Rocks Off" Germany with slightly different footage and the additional song "When the Whip Comes Down" 3 The best footage was captured at the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona where Ashby ended up directing from a gurney while hooked up to an IV [introvenious injection] (there are conflicting reports of whether Ashby had almost overdosed from partying too hard or if he had suffered a minor heart attack). For this particular concert Ashby had a twenty camera set-up. 4 Keith Richards got so annoyed at one point that he almost started a fistfight with one of the cinematographers. 5 Unfortunately, Let's Spend the Night Together was not a box office success and concert films have consistently proven to be unlikely box office hits with the occasional rare exception like Woodstock. That said, it's worth a watch for the eclectic set list. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Live concert performances from the Rolling Stones record setting 1981 North American tour promoting the Tattoo You album. Filmed at Sun Devil Stadium and the Meadowlands arena. Not a great view for fans sitting at the back of Sun Devil Stadium but at least they can say they were there. If you like the Stones, worth checking out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting that Ashby wasn't listed as an editor; even though this was produced around the time studios were routinely taking creative control from him, there were some particularly choice cuts and juxtapositions, and I suspect he did some uncredited editing work. I'll have to remember to look back through his biography to check for certain. Basically a well-put-together concert film culled from the high points of several 1981 shows by a Stones who were a bit past their peak, but only just (particularly grin-worthy are several shots of Bill Wyman looking on with detached amusement at Mick's antics - particularly depressing is that Mick was my age when this film was shot). Could have been more, but I suppose we already had Gimme Shelter. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member An awesome concert film of the Stones belting out their greatest hits such as the title track, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, Under My Thumb, Honkey Tonk Women, Jumpin' Jack Flash and many more in these two concerts in New Jersey and Arizona on their '81 tour Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
