Audience Member A truly awesome, intense, & unflinching look at the social/economical/political influences & environment that have helped spawn, nurture, & even sometimes try to tear down the modern day voice of the disenfranchised--which is "Hip-Hop". Great interviews throughout. It definitely takes its shots @ Reagan, Bush I & II, & many other right wing opponents to the poor. It does go much further than that though. The modern era of hip-hop is not by accident & most old-school artists see it for what it is---less substance, more consumerism for consumerism's sake, & simply just bigger business than most companies originally thought it would be. I would recommend this doc to most, but especially "Hip-Hop" fans who perhaps don't know the whole story. Check it on Netflix ASAP! This documentary is more about the struggles of blacks after the Civil Rights Movement. It talks about the prison system, drug policies, the crack epidemic, Reagan's economic plan, etc. With interviews with historians as well noted hip hop artists such as Common, KRS-One and more. Definately worth seeing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member It had a few good points behind the origins of hip hop and the rise of gangster hip hop. A lot of the political messages were B.S. It tries to make republicans look anti-black. The GOP is not anti-black. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
