Renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) has sworn vengeance upon the rare shark that devoured a member of his crew. In addition to his regular team, he is joined on his boat by Ned (Owen Wilson), a man who believes Zissou to be his father, and Jane (Cate Blanchett), a journalist pregnant by a married man. They travel the sea, all too often running into pirates and, perhaps more traumatically, various figures from Zissou's past, including his estranged wife, Eleanor (Anjelica Huston).

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Much like the titular oceanographer, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou's overt irony may come off as smug and artificial -- but for fans of Wes Anderson's unique brand of whimsy it might be worth the dive.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is so knowing and so arch: the first part striving for a faux-grandiosity that the second part tries to undercut by its pseudo-geekiness... but ends up being plain annoying. Go to Full Review

How much of this will work for you depends on your appetite for the picturesquely dysfunctional. Go to Full Review

It is such a brilliant idea, and everything looks so great, especially the way the film is constructed on Cousteau-esque lines, with the calm deliberation of a nature documentary from a more innocent age. Go to Full Review

Will always be Anderson's undersung gem. It's so quintessentially Anderson and, with its length, it's guilty of sprawling — but every absurdist moment is a marvel. Go to Full Review

While it would be nice to be able to laugh a little more (acoustic-guitar versions of David Bowie classics sung in Portuguese only go so far), the film delivers a metaphor for the death of romantic and robust boyhood imagination with great subtlety. Go to Full Review

It may be impossible to love The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, but it's remarkably easy to drown in its sea of eccentricity. Go to Full Review

Joshua V Dec 10 The tail end of Wes Anderson prime. It still has interesting characters and real emotion, which is mostly lacking from Wes' more recent films. See more Kyle C. @kylekc Dec 9 The Life Aquatic is Wes Anderson in mid-evolution. You can see flashes of the precision and emotional clarity he’d nail in later films, but here it still feels like he’s testing the waters. The world is delightfully odd, stitched together with charming stop-motion sea creatures and a deadpan sense of humor that leans hard on running gags and eccentric character quirks. The David Bowie soundtrack, especially the Portuguese covers sprinkled throughout, gives the whole thing a warm and slightly melancholy glow. I could listen to Seu Jorge’s voice forever. The crew dynamics are where the movie shines. Klaus steals scenes with his loyalty and emotional volatility, and the ragtag Team Zissou is consistently fun to watch even when the story drifts. The problem is Steve himself. He’s written as this washed-up, self-absorbed blowhard who can’t get out of his own way, and the film is clearly aware of that, but it still makes him tough to latch onto. It’s a bit like watching early The Office: the boss is the weakest link, and the people orbiting him end up doing the heavy lifting. There’s interesting thematic stuff about creative decline and the fear of becoming irrelevant, plus a gentle look at what it means to feel unworthy of your own legend. Those ideas stuck with me more than the emotional beats of the story itself. The film is cute, inventive, and unmistakably Anderson, but it never quite gels for me. I admire the craft and the oddball charm; I just wish I felt more connected to the heart of it. Thirty seconds in I knew it was a WA film because of the quirky premise with ultra quirky characters speaking bad dialogue. I made it 30 mins and bailed. Yes it's bonkers and crazy, but brilliant, funny and moving. See more Jennifer Tehani S May 31 I’m not a huge fan of Wes Anderson but this was such a fun and charming watch! I won’t watch it again, but it was worth seeing. Admittedly, I only sought this out because Seu Jorge is in it (I saw him play live in Rio) and I’m a water baby who just sold my boat so… this is by no means the least biased review out there, but I enjoyed it. Worth seeing it once for sure. Especially if you enjoy Seu Jorge’s covers of David Bowie… in Portuguese! I love his simple melodies and voice. Seu Jorge fans will enjoy this but as far as a movie-goer, I don’t know if I’d like it as much if I wasn’t so biased. See more Read all reviews
