Claire Shaffer New York Times Petersen’s bare-bones, on-the-ground production works well for a story like this, highlighting how vital these small workshops in homeless shelters and community centers can be. Sep 14, 2023 Full Review Dwight Brown DwightBrownInk.com Keep a hanky close. Tears will swell in your eyes, not from grief, but from inspiration. Rated: 3/4 Jun 21, 2022 Full Review Sandie Angulo Chen Common Sense Media LIFT is a tribute to this important program, but it also shows how uncomfortable and triggering it can be for Melendez to revisit the trauma of his own childhood -- and how LIFT, while empowering, isn't enough to undo the impact of systemic oppression. Rated: 4/5 Oct 4, 2023 Full Review Joey Moser Awards Daily Lift soars because of its raging, exuberant heart. Sep 25, 2023 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Following a familiar crowd-pleasing template, this documentary about a ballet program for at-risk children finds its stride due to its charismatic subjects. Drift B Not gonna lie this movie feels kinda weird and soulless and weird that it's so highly rated Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review Greg R Incredibly inspirational Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Jonathan J Bravo! As an African American male who grew up in the inner city and faced adversity while pursuing a career in the arts, "LIFT" is a profoundly relatable and inspirational film. The narrative strikes multiple chords on so many levels, as it authentically portrays the gritty realities of underrepresented voices and talent that often go unheard and unrecognized. Steven and Victor's differing journeys reflect the uphill battle that many face as they strive to rise above their challenges and constraints of their circumstances. The performances are nothing short of exceptional. Steven's struggle and determination mirror the resilience that countless young African artists exhibit daily. Watching this film, I felt like I personally knew each character. What sets LIFT apart is its unflinching exploration of diversity and inclusion issues in the field. The story courageously confronts systemic barriers that often hinder artists from marginalized backgrounds, offering a much-needed perspective on the importance of leveling the playing field, while reinforcing the idea that talent knows no color, and opportunities should be accessible to all. For me, it's a mirror reflecting my own journey, struggles, and victories — a well-documented testament to the resilience of individuals who leave it all at the door to achieve their own personal level of greatness. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Martha S This moving film tells an honest and beautiful story of some young people making their way through the difficult situation of unstable housing via the strength and beauty of art. A must see! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/29/23 Full Review Karen P A thoughtful and poignant example of the way exposure to the arts can change a person's life. A very important film for our time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/23 Full Review Nicole H LIFT is certainly upLIFTing!
