Independent documentarian Tony Buba returns to his birthplace of Braddock, Penn., a burnt-out steel town that awkwardly embraces the eccentric and mildly successful director as a living legend. Soon Buba recruits his old friend "Sweet" Sal Carollo, a slick-talking Pennsylvania tough guy, to star in his latest film. But when the production falls apart, the unfinished project becomes just another example of the heartache that has become the former smelting center's only consistent by-product.

walter m Tony Buba makes documentary films about his hometown of Braddock, Pa which is not that far from Pittsburgh. As he has become better known around town and noticed by filmmakers like Werner Herzog, he takes the time to contemplate his own future while also charting the progress of the local workers movement in his 1988 film "Lightning over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy".(In nearby Homestad in the present day, industry has been replaced by a shopping center with lower paying jobs.) He wonders if it is time to move on, leaving behind some of the local characters who have been taking over his work, while giving examples of films he could be making in Hollywood. What he definitely won't do is pay $15,000 for the rights to Jumpin' Jack Flash, so the audience will just have to sing along. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
