News footage from the time builds this extraordinary story about a nineteen year old boy from the hard side of the road in Gippsland, Victoria. It's a deceptively simple story told mostly by Lionel Rose, his trainers and his immediate family as they watch the screen with us at home in 2008. But underlying the informality is something else, a humility that Lionel Rose brought to world fame, an acceptance of fallibility and a peaceful return to the place he was born.
