Globe and Mail Rated: 2/4 Apr 12, 2002 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Although younger children may enjoy the movie on a simple and direct level, there's little depth or texture to make it interesting for viewers over the age of, say, 10. It's all on one note. Steve D Cute family film not as good as most Little Women adaptations but effective on its own. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member for anyone who complained about this movie . I have to ask did they even see it . it was a worthy follow up to the big screen adaptation of little woman. the major different being that it had a different cast . it is by far the best adaption of little men the last one was back in the forties and was a comedy . i think this could have done very well as a a theatrical release instead it was cheapened by making it direct to video. this did not mean it was not as good as its predecessor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie so much, but it is so hard to find. It is a great mix of so many emotions and is so beautifully told. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a good family film, but it feels like it's missing something. And that something makes it seem half hearted and forgettable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Many years ago, when the VCR was the main entertainment medium. I recall the times when I'd put in a movie and watch the same commercials over and over again. For whatever reason, one film that struck me as 'interesting' was Warner Bros. "Little Men"--a film that hung around the corner of my eye for so long. The funny bit is that I'd come across the VCR a few times in the years that have passed since the initial viewings of the commercial in the late 90s but I never bothered to buy it. Until a visit a thrift shop on 8/13/13 reignited an old curiosity about the film I've always had: what's it about? the performances by all the actors/actresses are "pure"--not a single one of them seems untrue to their respective characters. The plot seems familiar to me (the book that came into mind while watching this film was "Jake's Orphan"--but I doubt any of you have read it) and "Little Men" does manage to use its tender moments appropriately. But the smoking/alcohol scene was a bit problematic, (not necessarily for me) considering that the film was basically advertised as a family film (whether that scene changes your view of the film is completely justified). There were a small problems but I won't go into them much. For instance--bear with me, it is a spoiler--one of the characters dies in the film, his death is said to have a big effect on the boys but that relationship is never established at all in the film (though it is possible that I missed it). I will add that the first half of the film is undeniably solid whereas the second half somehow and disappointingly loses its focus. "Little Men" desires to be a film for all ages, a Christmas tale, and a coming-of-age-story--it picks and chooses from these sub-genres in a cute way but combing all of them together loses the film's sense of direction. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review ashley h Louisa May Alcott's Little Men is a heart-warming film. It is about two street kids - one who becomes the recipient of a kind benefactor and the other who goes on the run on the street. Mariel Hemingway and Ben Cook give fantastic performances. The screenplay is well written. Rodney Gibbons did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama.
