Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut It doesn’t last long, but Netflix’s short documentary is a powerful, feminine look at female sumo wrestling. Rated: 4/5 Nov 9, 2024 Full Review Brenden Gallagher The Daily Dot The perfect documentary short leaves you simultaneously wishing for more and appreciating the brevity of what has been placed in front of you. Audience Member This is a gem of a film however quick. I hope more people can watch it now it’s easy to find streaming! One woman’s fight to continue a sport she loved - that similarly to girls all over the world she was allowed to be competitive in her early school years but as she grew older the more she became aware this sport that made her so happy but that she was the best at even out of the boys in her area - She learned that when she grew up, suddenly this sport would be ripped from her. That she would be sent to early retirement. As the professional teams were a boys only club because of “tradition”. It didn’t matter if any women excelled at sumo or if it filled their hearts with joy. Just tradition and a woman “walking behind a man”. This film shows how crushing this can be on a small personal scale without preaching at all. And without feeling bleek. It is beautiful, strong, full of hope and beauty. I loved the message. I loved our heroine. And lastly a spoiler: she should have won that international championship! It was so close and Russia sent a literal Giant. A giant. Our girl was a far better wrestler. The other simply had the whole Giant thing in her favor. That pissed me off. But other then that a perfect film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Audience Member Excelente cortometraje, me emocioné con Hiyori! espero Japón pueda reconocer el esfuerzo de las mujeres luchadoras de sumo. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I was so pleasantly surprised. Kon Hiyori is so full of passion and I hope that the pro sports world will accept her and people like her. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I was expecting it to be more riveting. Still, it's a bit interesting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This was inspiring but 18 minutes is not enough. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Great cinematography and an inspiring story, she is a true athlete and deserves to be treated as such. I used to think I wanted to see a traditional Sumo match in Japan but now I think I'd rather watch the women's sumo! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
