Christine S @christinems 3 days ago I was immersed and riveted watching Local Area Network. As the plot progressed, I discovered that writer and director Glenn Garrabrant had crafted a story grounded in reality, not cliches. The film doesn't promote simple solutions to complex mental health conditions nor does it suggest that loving friends and family members are all someone needs to cope with severe depression. Instead, the story is a realistic portrayal of what it can be like to care about someone in pain. The movie sparked strong feelings of self-compassion for my own past experiences of depression. I also felt renewed the empathy and appreciation for those who supported me at various difficult points in my life. The characters are relatable, warm, fun, and nerdy in a wonderfully familiar way, like I know this group of people and we're part of the same community. This sense of belonging is the heartbeat of the film and has stayed with me long since the beautifully-crafted end credits. It brings a very grounded and realistic viewpoint of life through the eyes of various characters. Writer-director Glenn Garrabrant presents a poignant, intelligent, thoroughly honest drama about a young man who, after two suicide attempts, finds himself in a residential mental hospital with the chance to be able to leave for a day once a week in order to visit with loved ones. His time with his friends primarily consists of gaming together without use of the Internet - that is, connecting through the turn-of-the-millennium-era local area network, one of several meanings behind the film's title. His relationships with old college friends, his father, and his ex-wife are all depicted in deeply moving and, in some cases, startling moments that successfully (and admiringly) steer clear of the flamboyant and melodramatic. There are no "big scenes" to serve as potential Oscar clips filled with hysterical outbursts.
