Critics Consensus

Despite Richard Gere's compelling turn as a grieving man, this melodrama may leave viewers longing for something more rewarding, like the filmmaker's original Israeli version.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Manipulative. Clever, but manipulative. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Still, this is a welcome and unusual movie, and Gere gives a compelling performance. Rated: 3/4 Jun 25, 2024 Full Review Caroline Siede The Daily Beast Though the action has been moved to Canada, [Savi] Gabizon’s twisty story of grief and discovery remains largely the same. So it’s odd that the biggest problem with Longing is that it feels like its tone got lost in translation. Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Manuel Betancourt FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) No character functions like a human being. None of them make decisions or tell you things, and the dialogue is so sterile. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Christie Cronan Common Sense Media This drama about love, loss, and self-discovery distills the complexity of grief. Jun 24, 2024 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com The movie's entertainment is based on Gere's performance and he never disappoints. Rated: 6/10 Jun 18, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

razvan p wow. such a great script, such a great thriller. perfect acting, charismatic actors .. just a delight. haven't seen anything like it . went from laughing to crying to laughing again. so much conflict , so much sanity ! praise God! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Lachlan M I almost can’t believe this dramatic movie starring Richard Gere was made. Great start, terrible middle and the ending was almost comical. The start of the movie: In a nutshell Richard's character recently discovers he has a son from an ex girlfriend he last saw twenty years ago. They never met as news of the boy’s existence is learned after the son dies in a car accident. End of the movie: A wedding is held between his dead teenage son and a dead teenage woman who never knew one other while alive. The parents of the deceased think a wedding is appropriate because they share the same values at a graveyard. The movie is so bad I can’t believe a film studio would finance such rubbish after reading this garbage script. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Gerardo C Longing for a little respect; waste of time! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Mario Alejandro C Dumb, boring, a complete waste of time Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Chris D Absolutely ridiculous, don't waste your time bizarre is an understatement. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review R L W The acting by some is acceptable and in fact I think it is one of Gere’s better performances but the plot line is weak and disappointing. Diane Kruger never disappoints and she is an asset although unable to save the film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
