      Critics Consensus

Newcomer Saskia Rosendahl gives an astonishingly assured performance in the title role, and director Cate Shortland establishes a delicate, disturbingly ominous tone in the powerful World War II drama Lore.

Karla F True stories from the last that educate, excite, scare and warn! Awesome. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/23 Full Review geo l The critics are a bit too good for the film, but it could have been worse Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review charles w WOW! One of the most powerful and tragic stories of survival I have ever watched. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I didn't agree with the critics. The movie is ok but not a best picture foreign Oscar's; must been ok only year. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review peter w How to you summon up the resources to adapt to a complete overhaul of your life and values? Cate Shortland does not sugar-coat the personal re-evaluation that Lore faces when the structures that provided a privileged life crumbles away with the defeat and death of the Furer. There was likely nothing in her experience that could prepare Lore for the life and death struggle of fleeing on foot with four younger siblings to the safety of grandmother's house (who happened to bear more than some resemblance to the "bad wolf"). Nor was there any life experience that could help her see the Jewish traveler who helped them as anything but a pariah. But we are drawn in to watched the beginning of a transformation of values deftly managed by Saskia Rosendahl under the sympathetic direction of Shortland. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Jesse D A deeply tragic look at those dark days immediately following wwii. It is told from the point of view rarely seen. The losers. Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune Lore, from Australian director Cate Shortland, proceeds like a long-ago fairy tale, dark-hued, grounded in real-life 20th-century horrors. Rated: 3/4 Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Roger Clarke Sight & Sound Lore is a akin to a bourgeois German version of Elem Klimov's 1985 Belarus-set Come and See, and it has some outstanding features. The star turn is the lurking cinematography of Adam Arkapaw. Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The Australian director Cate Shortland has made a quite stunning film about the collapse of Nazi Germany, seen not from a Berlin bunker but through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl. Rated: 5/5 Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Dave Giannini InSession Film Lore is a movie that rewards patience. Feb 27, 2024 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com A film you simply don't want to miss. Rated: 3.5/4.0 Sep 14, 2020 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Examiner Cate Shortland's tough, moving film is shot with great intimacy, driving home the idea that great horrors are ultimately a personal responsibility.
