In 17th-century England, farmer John Ridd (John Loder) refuses to seek revenge on the notorious Doone outlaw family who murdered his father. Instead, he assumes management of the family farm and looks after his mother and sisters. One day he meets Lorna Doone (Victoria Hopper), the granddaughter of patriarch Ensor Doone (Herbert Lomas). Discovering that Lorna is being forced to marry Ensor's heir, Carver (Roy Emerson), John brings her to the farm, to the dismay of both his family and Carver.
