Siddhant Adlakha Variety This mode of storytelling can be heavy-handed for the sake of mass appeal, but director Kiran Rao deftly combines the literal and symbolic, resulting in a crowd-pleaser filled — for better or worse — with innate goodness. Jan 4, 2025 Full Review Catherine Bray Guardian If you can get with the larky premise, Kiran Rao’s tale of mixed-up newlyweds makes for a gently probing comedy of manners. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Kiran Rao film is unapologetically message-y, but its strongly beating feminist heart overrides the broad brush strokes. Sometimes things need to be stated loud and clear. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Frank J. Avella The Contending Lost Ladies is a charming, sometimes biting, satire that weaves a love story with an empowering tale of one woman’s fight for her freedom—and fervent desire for an education. Rated: B Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Jimmy Cage Jimmy Cage Movie Reviews (YouTube) LAAPATAA LADIES is a nice feel-good movie at the intersection of mainstream and independent cinema. Certainly a bit mellow, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Rated: 7/10 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Ishita Sengupta OTTplay Laapataa Ladies is a fun, revisionist narrative where all the pointers of patriarchy are turned on their head, but at the same time, it treats feminism as a learned process and not a quick solution. Mithun Very beautifully done movie. Every scene is well done with mix of comedy and feel good scenes Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review UT Great story and overall outstanding movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Ramesh Script acting and editing were superb Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Atanu D Absolutely a must see movie. I was spellbound by the settings, and also realised how much of a critical role Indian Railways plays in connecting parts of our country. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Daniel G Absolutely delightful Indian movie that's not quite a comedy, though there are some funny moments, but rather a baring of the challenges of being a woman in India (set in the early 2000s, though), especially in the vast expanse of villages. One aspect that's always hard to fathom for foreigners are the subtle or not so subtle regional and classe differences. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Sharron M All that should be imagined as a fine movie. Entertaining , accessible, poignant and well filmed. Thanks India.
