Ed Cumming Independent (UK) The aggregate effect is undoubtedly powerful, but Lost Lives has its limitations as a piece of filmmaking. Rated: 4/5 Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian Few films released in 2019 have seemed as timely or as urgent as Lost Lives. Rated: 4/5 Oct 17, 2019 Full Review Emma Keyes Film Ireland Magazine Although the aesthetics undermine the power of Lost Lives, the film still stands as an important testament to a traumatic time period whose repercussions resonate in Northern Ireland today. Dec 10, 2019 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film If you think that going to sit in a cinema and hear a list of stories like this sounds dull, you'll be surprised by how hard this film will grab you. Distance does nothing to reduce the emotional impact. Rated: 4.5/5 Oct 18, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

isla s This is undoubtedly a poignant, touching and moving documentary but I feel it somehow suffers a bit from being so heavily artistic. I don't have anything against arty films and certain imagery does bring a sense of power to it but I felt that what this documentary film needed, certainly ideally, would be more in the way of people shown reading directly from the book and, if/when possible, footage of the families being read about. There is some but relatively little. The imagery shown mostly consists of abandoned/derelict buildings being slowly explored by camera, alongside library footage of the aftermath of violent attacks during the Irish 'troubles'. This film features readings by many well known Irish actors, such as Kenneth Branagh, Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt. Its certainly thought provoking and very much about the human cost of war and conflict in general, obviously more specifically about the Irish troubles dating, primarily, from the 1970s through to the late 1990s. Its worth a watch, so yes I'd recommend it but its obviously a tough watch, so in that sense it may not suit, or appeal to, everyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
