Kendall D Absolutely brilliant movie - a ballet of pacing from tres lentement to frantic. Packed with memorable moments of human observation. The full gamut from comedy to blunt tragedy. Leaves you shaken and speechless at the end. Giancarlo Gianinni is amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review Audience Member This is a fun film, full of raunchy humor. The premise of a lonely anarchist falling in love with a prostitute just before his planned assassination of Mussolini is comic gold. Some memorable scenes include the one of the lovelorn anarchist drunkenly carousing around an empty Rome with one of Il Duce's own guards, and the montage of the girls in the brothel working their trade with all its pretense baldly on display. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review paul d In this movie Lina Wertmuller gives us a raw, raucous and deeply humane insight into life under the Italian Fascist government, played out almost entirely in a Roman bordello and in some magnificent Roman settings. It downplays the politics and builds the characters out, especially the increasingly tormented farmer. He is played magnificently by Giancarlo Giannini, and has only become an anarchist recently, after the brutal murder of his friend by the state. Mariangela Melato is also outstanding. It's a political movie and a love story, and is a great movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Wertmüller almost lulls you into a false sense of security with the romance that develops but the brutal ending undercuts that. The idea here is that the political reality of Fascist Italy turned lots of lovable dopes into radicals and/or victims and the movie functions as an appropriately sad ode to those men and women. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member loved the guitar serenade at dinner. loved the political expression, loved the relationships.
