Amy Nicholson Variety Coco and Mahlik's scenes are the only ones that seem to take place on earth. Everything else is from some Maya Angelou-inspired Mars. Rated: C- Dec 2, 2017 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety With a plot as predictable as a haiku, RZA and screenwriter Nicole Jefferson Asher would have done better to embrace the strangeness. Dec 1, 2017 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times There's not much added to the static thump of clich in "Love Beats Rhymes" to give this tale of a struggling young female rapper-poet any special life. Nov 30, 2017 Full Review Julian Lytle Punch Drunk Critics This movie overall is just ok, not outstanding in any way but it was nice to see a story like this with a black woman as the hero so it wasn't a complete waste. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 11, 2020 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International Music artists Azealia Banks and RZA both find their footing in film, with this portrait of a young, gifted and black wannabe female rapper. Dec 1, 2017 Full Review Jamie Broadnax Black Girl Nerds What keeps you watching are the characters, their character development and the brewing romance between Derek and Coco that in an unexpected plot twist; suddenly gets complicated. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It wasnt as bad as i thought it would be Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member It's like if Disney's Let It Shine decided to do a remake with a couple of curse words. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Great film. Loved the film from beginning to end. Excellent! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie was cool but to tell the truth Azealia Banks sucked. She is a horrible actress Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member It was better than we expected. The movie itself was pretty predictable but a fun watch. I enjoyed the storyline and the actors. The subject really interested me and I've never seen a movie explore rap and poetry this way. I always get a bit confused when I see Hana Mae Lee talk in a movie, to be honest. All I see is her Pitch Perfect character. She is a great actress though! I enjoyed the movie and it's an easy watch. If the subject interests you I would for sure recommend it :-) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
