J. R. Jones Chicago Reader [Director Lisa Immordino Vreeland's] best accomplishment is having gathered so much of Beaton's work from various disciplines into one place, so the full force of his aesthetic can be appreciated. Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader The film version of My Fair Lady is a ceremonious bore, and the viewer has Cecil Beaton's pompously sedentary, open-casket visual compositions to blame. Rated: 1/5 Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post Thorough and pleasurable - if lightweight... Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 25, 2018 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It moves chronologically through the man's life with none of the style Beaton brought to his own life on display but narration by Rupert Everett, lifted directly from the photographer's own diaries, brings intimacy to the proceedings. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills This documentary tribute is colorful if somewhat frustrating, though that may be inevitable... Oct 15, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review Love, Cecil doesn't shy away from Beaton's contradictions or from his being something of a poseur -- at times he almost embraced the double life he was leading -- and that makes the film all the more watchable and substantive. Audience Member Well presented documentary on the life and career of photographer, costume and set designer, author, illustrator, and painter Cecil Beaton. Although his life story is quite fascinating, I thought the real power of the film was in the striking photographs he took, as well as the dazzling costumes and lush sets he created for such films as My Fair Lady and Gigi. The movie is narrated by Rupert Everett and directed by Lisa Immordino Vreeland. There were no subtitles on my DVD copy, but I was able to access them through the closed captioning option on my remote. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
