Richard Kuipers Variety Although the pace tails off just slightly toward the end, the pic never loses its charm, and Habicht emerges as the funniest and most lovable Kiwi to hit New York since Flight of the Conchords. Mar 25, 2013 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Sheltering behind his harmlessly dorky persona, Habicht never shows us anything painful enough to seem real; the film is far more an exercise in self-promotion than a study of the ups and downs of love. Rated: 1.5/5 Dec 7, 2012 Full Review Kate Rodger Newshub (NZ) Typically blurring the lines between reality and fiction, this film is surprising, brave, refreshing, infuriating and inspiring. Rated: 4/5 Aug 26, 2019 Full Review Lauren Carroll Harris Concrete Playground The directive isn't realism or even true love. It's cleverness & kitsch of the stripey socks & frosted cupcake variety. It's all pretty meta: in these post-everything times, Love Story takes the idea of a film within a film & rewrites it on the fly. Rated: 2 May 4, 2015 Full Review Danny Murphy Empire Magazine Australasia Smartypantsy, fresh, brave: a rom-com experiment that will have you smiling on hitherto unknown levels. Rated: 4/5 Dec 7, 2012 Full Review Simon Foster sbs.com.au Minor shortcomings aside, Love Story is a winning blend of soft-hearted cinematic romance and doco-style human insight. I've heard it compared to a Woody Allen film (both directors are slightly goofy characters enchanted by New York). However, Allen tends to give a sanitised view of the city, while Habicht interviews all types, even the homeless, resulting in a much more realistic picture of New York. This is probably due to his low budget and his reliance on the kindness of strangers.
