I love Cecilia Roth, so I've watched this movie several times along with her other works. But in this one I was introduced to Kuno Becker.... Oh so yummy!

On 30 December, in the airport of Mexico City, the husband of Lucia (Cecilia Roth) vanishes a few minutes before the last call to the flight to Rio de Janerio, where they are going to see the reveillon in Copacabana.Lucia is an aging childrenâs book writer who is unsatisfied with her life in Mexico. Lucia goes to the police to report the disappearance, & back home, she is mainly supported by two neighbors, the seventy year old Felix (Carlos Ãlvarez-Novoa) & the young man Adrian (Kuno Becker). Together, they look for Lucia's husband, in a journey of friendship, love & self-discovery for Lucia. Alternating the reality & the imagination of the character of Lucia, who is the narrator of the story. Cecilia Roth (star of several Pedro Almovodar films) makes this film comes work & become alive. The film is surreal in parts & also makes strong comments on the state of corruption in politics in Mexico. I have not read Rosa Montero's novel, The Daughter of the Cannibal so I don't know how or where the plot goes wrong (according to some). Writer/director Antonio Serrano, adapting the novel by Homónima de Rosa Montero, has created a madcap mystery/thriller that attempts to address a middle aged woman's rebirth, marriage, kidnapping. It also covers revolutionaries and government corruption and all this within a children's book author's magical realism framework and then you can throw in a September-May romance. I enjoyed this movie. Then upcoming star Kumo Becker (mid 20's) is very sexy in this May September romance with Lucia the older woman. It is an exceptionally well made film & has great cinematography. The voice over narration became tiresome & the plot could have been handled differently rather than voice over. The film is enjoyable in the manner of a high-gloss soap opera, but its forays into socio-political commentary are as hard to take & the plot to complex. I still found it a very enjoyable black comedy with hints of self introspection & melancholy (on the part of Lucia) It becomes a mystery/thriller with lots of unexpected twists. The ending of the movie left me flat but I still enjoyed the film. There are several negative reviews of the film & I do not agree. Despite the sins of the script, Lucia Lucia manages some credibility. Most of it comes from good direction, great art direction, & great acting. There are just not many films coming from our neighbor to the South Mexico & this film is way way above average. 3 1/2 stars,
