Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom was written, directed and produced by first time filmmaker Pawo Choyning Dorji. Dorji is a Buddhist, which in retrospect comes as no surprise; the story he tells unfolds like a Buddhist fable for modern times. Go to Full Review

It's a simple story of human redemption. A young man who is the least motivated teacher serving in a Bhutanese city, is transferred to the most remote school in the world. There, given that his phone battery has died out and can't be recharged, since the village he is assigned to lacks electricity, he finally becomes engaged with his profession and the community where he lives. The movie was filmed on location, and uses many children of the remote mountain village where it was filmed as actors. I found the children's eagerness to learn and the villagers' support for the teacher very touching. The movie is both centering and calming, and beautiful. See more Read all reviews
