Claudio C @Claudio666 Dec 1 Ma Da: The Drowning Spirit (2024) The Vietnamese Legend of Ma Da (12,100 – 30 Nov 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In a fishing village in Vietnam, Ms. Lê (Việt Hương) is a body collector from the river, giving peace to the dead and to their families. She lives with her daughter, the girl Nhung (Dạ Chúc), and the old Mrs. Tư (Diệu Đức) they call her grandma. When an experienced fisherman disappears in the river after finding a doll, Ms. Lê retrieves his body. Meanwhile, Nhung finds the doll in the border of the river and brings it home. Soon Nhung is haunted everywhere by a spirit but Ms. Lê believes she is only scared. When Nhung mysteriously disappears. Ms. Lê finally believes there is a Ma Da and asks for help to her friend Mr. Tư (Trung Dân), who is expert in spirits while searches for Nhung in the river. "Ma Da: The Drowning Spirit" (2024) is a Vietnamese supernatural movie directed by Nguyen Huu Hoang and based on the legend of Ma Da, unknown for us Westerns. It is a ghost story about vengeful spirits of people who have drowned, and their bodies were not retrieved and lurk in lakes and rivers to drag living people to replace them. The plot is haunting, with beautiful cinematography, and the conclusion is sad, when the viewer learns the fate of Ms. Lê. Unfortunately, the culture is too different for Westerns and is hard to understand, for example, a person dedicated to body collector work. My vote is five. The story seems to be poorly written with zero research about this spirit’s backstory.
