Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express ...the writing is bland, and there’s nothing new in the CGI (computer generated images) which is extensively used. The film itself falters in the way it keeps its first half loose, and the second half muddled. Rated: 2/5 Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Anupama Chopra The Hollywood Reporter A few fun jump scares but little that chills or thrills Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Saibal Chatterjee NDTV [Maa] cannot, however, prevent itself from straying into laughable terrain more often than is good for it. Maa is just too weird to be the patriarchy-busting fantasy that it aims to be. Rated: 2/5 Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Rishabh Suri Hindustan Times [Maa] wants to say something powerful about a mother pulling out all stops for her children, but sadly the beating heart is buried underneath the conventional storyline. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Nandini Ramnath Scroll.in Maa is a poor showcase of Furia’s feel for the genre. The film neither creates emotional engagement with its characters nor has the technical polish to be a convincing scare-fest. Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Ganesh Aaglave Firstpost ...the best part is how the film perfectly blended the horror genre with mythology, which not only made it relevant and earthy but also narrated the plot of good over evil with a unique plot. Sam s Movie Review: “Maa” (Horror Film) Maa is an utterly disappointing horror film that fails on every level — be it story, acting, or scare factor. The plot is predictable, filled with clichéd jump scares and overused horror tropes. The performances are weak, with characters lacking depth or emotional impact. The background score tries too hard to be spooky but ends up being annoying. The direction is lazy, and the climax is laughably bad. It’s hard to stay engaged or even take the film seriously. Overall, Maa is a total waste of time and should be avoided by anyone who appreciates good horror cinema. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Shailendra K Folk Horror is a sub-genre of Horror which has recently re-emerged from obscurity across the globe with movies like the Witch, the Apostle, Midsommar, similarly in India movies like Tumbbad, Bulbbul, Chhorii, Shaitaan etc. These are not necessarily fast paced, jump scare laden horror movies but mostly slow burn, folklore and mythology themed movies that explore superstition, sacrifice and dark aspects of nature. In the current era when Horror Comedies have found unprecedented box office success, folk horror movies like Maa is a step in the right direction for horror movie enthusiasts. Maa is not in the same league as Tumbbad and the others listed above but is a good attempt at serious folk horror. The movie stays focused on the mythology with no moments of comic relief as unnecessary detours. It slowly and steadily sets up the battle of good vs evil reminiscent of Maa Kali's showdown with the Rakshas Rakhtbeej. The end result is a pretty good attempt at folk horror. It is not great and could have been much better but still pretty effective as a serious horror movie. Technically the movie is pretty strong in its visual imagery, practical VFX, make up, background music and overall cinematography. Kajol comes across as a very potent protagonist and gives a very fiery performance. Ronit Roy also gives a pretty decent performance, as do most of the other supporting cast. Kherin Sharma as Kajol's daughter feels a bit miscast and unconvincing in her role. Kajol channels a really strongly motherly bond towards her daughter, but Kherin seems a bit bland. There are some pretty effective jump scares and some very well choreographed scary action sequences, however the movie would have benefited from more of such scares and sequences. Horror enthusiasts, especially those who like well made, slow burn folk horror should like the movie. I hope the movie finds its audience at the box office, especially if we want to watch more serious horror movies in theaters. It would be sad to give it the Tumbbad treatment on initial theatrical release only to rediscover it as a cult classic on streaming later. It is not at the level of Tumbbad or Chhorii or even Bulbbul but is worthy to be in the same sub-genre of good folk horror movies. I liked it. 7.5/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Movies ka D “Maa” (2025) is a gripping horror drama featuring Kajol in a powerful role as a mother battling supernatural forces to protect her daughter. The film skillfully blends mythological elements with emotional storytelling, creating a tense and engaging atmosphere. Kajol’s performance is widely praised, and the direction keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. With its unique mix of horror and family drama, “Maa” stands out as a must-watch for fans of the genre. 🎬 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Read all reviews
