Phil Hall Examiner.com Witty, sophisticated and delightful animated parody. Rated: 5/5 Jan 7, 2016 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed A novel animated gem for the Halloween season... Oct 7, 2013 Full Review Anton Bitel Projected Figures nostalgia is key in this loving pastiche of bygone horror. The outmodedness of the villains, even the corniness of the gags, only adds to the film's irresistible charms. It is a fitting swansong to the whole era of 'castle horror' Feb 8, 2010 Full Review Dan Lybarger eFilmCritic.com It doesn't take much effort to spot the short cuts the filmmakers have taken. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2009 Full Review Sean Axmaker Seanax.com ... the mix of innocence, stop-motion slapstick, off-beat spoofing, and just plain goofiness is a lot of fun, and sometimes the sheer absurdity of it all can sneak up on you. Jacob B A sort-of spiritual prequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas with elements of Hotel Transylvania, it's nice to see Rankin/Bass tackle something other than Christmas for a change and Mad Monster Party? is a decent, harmless piece of old-timey stop-motion, not to mention how impressive it is that a majority of characters are voiced by the same guy whilst still sounding diverse, but I thought this film was a bit aimless and underwhelming. It feels more like a made-for-TV film that somehow got a theatrical release with uneven pacing and a rather episodic approach to its storytelling coupled with its actual main protagonist being out of focus for the most part. Then again, he's not exactly a compelling protagonist with a vibrant personality. And as for the songs? They aren't bad but they are forgettable and I've yet to have any real desire to revisit them on YouTube. The slapstick shenanigans are okay. A passable time-waster for younger audiences for Halloween but I wouldn't be surprised if, even without recency bias, they find themselves preferring Hotel Transylvania 1 & 2 over this film. I'm sorry guys, I know this is a cult classic and I really wanted to like this film more than I did but it just didn't leave a lasting impression on me. Oh well, at least now I have closure after putting off this movie for over a decade. It's just a shame that it ended up leaving something to be desired. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie hits the nostalgia button just right. Good memories of watching this on TV in the 70s. A perfect blend of humor, fun, and music, with the stop-motion animation that Rankin/Bass perfected. Gale Garnett as Francesca was perfect, and I have no idea why the song "Never Was a Love Like Mine For You" that she sings in the film didn't become popular or a standard, it's just good! This film is a one-of-a-kind treasure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review woody w Something Rankin-Bass should have learned with Rudolph - an hour or less will keep kids watching. Adults will get bigger kick out of this than kids. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Very well put together animated fare. Really enjoyed the different actor portrayals. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A Rankin/Bass gem that showcases all of the biggest names in 30s-50s horror. The stop-motion is charming and the created sets of Frankenstein's castle are far more decorated than some other locations in Rankin/Bass specials. A cutesy watch for all ages that has just enough of a story to keep your attention. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A nice classic to watch around Halloween time for the family. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
