Erika C I always wondered why Rankin and Bass never made any Halloween films—then I found out about Mad Monster Party? I thought, “Huh, why didn’t they ever play this on ABC when I was a kid like all the other specials?” After watching it, I know exactly why! Geez! This has to be one of the worst Rankin and Bass films I’ve ever seen—and it’s not like they’re known for great cinema! 😂 I didn’t expect cinematic brilliance, but I did expect something cute, campy, and feel-good. Instead, the pacing is painfully slow, the animation is rough, and the character movement is choppy—definitely not their best work. The story and characters are awful and totally unlikable. The voice acting feels mismatched and awkward, like the voices didn’t even belong to the characters half the time. It’s also weirdly inappropriate for kids, with some slightly perverted themes. Like, the redhead has these huge knockers and everyone’s lusting over her. I mean—it was the 60s, but still. 😬 And don’t even get me started on the music—it’s this sultry 60s cocktail lounge vibe that doesn’t fit the Halloween theme at all. The original songs are completely forgettable. I want my $3.99 back from Amazon. Watching this movie was torture! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Matt D Oh my gosh, never thought this misery would end. Imagine spending months moving characters and props bit by bit, then you see all the effort wasted when you see the finished product. Perhaps after a dozen beers, it would be better. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/25 Full Review Michael R I love this movie! I saw it as a kid, in 1967. I got the dvd, just a couple of years ago. Lots of fun to see again! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review Rick H Great movie. Love all of the old monsters. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Jacob B A sort-of spiritual prequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas with elements of Hotel Transylvania, it's nice to see Rankin/Bass tackle something other than Christmas for a change and Mad Monster Party? is a decent, harmless piece of old-timey stop-motion, not to mention how impressive it is that a majority of characters are voiced by the same guy whilst still sounding diverse, but I thought this film was a bit aimless and underwhelming. It feels more like a made-for-TV film that somehow got a theatrical release with uneven pacing and a rather episodic approach to its storytelling coupled with its actual main protagonist being out of focus for the most part. Then again, he's not exactly a compelling protagonist with a vibrant personality. And as for the songs? They aren't bad but they are forgettable and I've yet to have any real desire to revisit them on YouTube. The slapstick shenanigans are okay. A passable time-waster for younger audiences for Halloween but I wouldn't be surprised if, even without recency bias, they find themselves preferring Hotel Transylvania 1 & 2 over this film. I'm sorry guys, I know this is a cult classic and I really wanted to like this film more than I did but it just didn't leave a lasting impression on me. Oh well, at least now I have closure after putting off this movie for over a decade. It's just a shame that it ended up leaving something to be desired.
