In the mid-1800s in a northern French province, impressionable young Emma Roualt (Valentine Tessier) pines for the romantic life she reads about in novels. When kind doctor Charles Bovary (Pierre Renoir) tends to her father's broken leg, he is attracted to Emma and eventually courts and marries her. Desirous of glory and wealth, Emma pushes the decent but limited Charles to extend himself -- and when he meets with disaster, Emma begins a series of dangerous affairs to quell her dismay.

Harold C. Schonberg New York Times Turned out by a capable French director, with an excellent cast at his command, the screen version of the tragic life of the middle-class small-town girl... makes the most of a subject hardly likely to stir the pulses of a modern audience. Rated: 3/5 Aug 8, 2006 Full Review Derek Adams Time Out Butchered by its original distributor (who cut it by an hour), surviving in a merely adequate print, this is nevertheless superb early Renoir. Audience Member Very true to the book - rare in Hollywood. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Renoir's doomiest film. Claustrophobic mise-en-scene. Excellent turns by Tessier and Pierre Renoir. Seek this one out, even if the final (available) version was edited to hell by the producer (?) after Renoir finished it.
