King Louis XV of France (Reginald Owen) finds himself widowed, lonely and dissolute until his adviser, Richelieu (Osgood Perkins), introduces him to the vivacious commoner Madame Du Barry (Dolores del Río). As various factions vie for political power, Du Barry seduces the king with her charmingly outrageous demands. Though internecine squabbling continues as King Louis' health fades, Du Barry tutors her successor, the beautiful and ambitious Marie Antoinette (Anita Louise).

william d Madame du Barry was a very interesting historical figure, but you wouldn't know it from this movie. While the film does try to offer some (inaccurate) historical context this is mostly just a risque (for the 1930s) romp at the royal court. Dolores del Rio is certainly nice to look at though.
