Critics Consensus

Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion is sincere in its positive intentions, but leaves something to be desired as a film.

Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Rated: 2/5 Mar 11, 2006 Full Review Randy Cordova Arizona Republic Nothing that happens seems the least bit believable, and everything is brash and loud. All that's missing is the laugh track. Rated: 3/5 Mar 10, 2006 Full Review Jim Ridley Village Voice Perry's vaudevillian shamelessness and indifference to committee-approved taste are energizing and frequently jaw-dropping. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 15, 2020 Full Review Dustin Putman TheFilmFile.com Tyler Perry means well, but there is no denying that all of this would work far better on daytime television. Rated: 2/4 Nov 14, 2013 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy The dysfunctional script and operatically excessive direction ... land someplace closer to outsider art than bad moviedom. Audience Member This is one of the first 'Madea'- titled films, and boy, does it show. This is a pure soap opera - filled to the brim with soap opera-level acting, soap opera-level drama, and soap opera-level plot devices. It is awful and I would never recommend to anyone. With that being said, I am very glad to have seen it. Oh, and the 'Reunion' that Tyler speaks of (in the title of the film!) finally comes about at 1 hour 10 in. And the wedding was tacky as hell. Finally, is everyone too stupid to notice that the kids walking down the aisle are not the kids of the bride and groom? Earlier, we are introduced to their kids. The woman has one boy and one girl. The man has one boy. When we get to the wedding, the kids walking down the aisle are one boy and two girls. Who in the hell is so stupid as to screw that up? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Madea's Family Reunion demonstrates what a family reunion should be and what people should take from it. This movie shows families being forced, broken, created, built and many more. This movie shows a mother's capability of controlling her daughters life leaving the daughter in a difficult circumstance but afraid to fight for herself. This movie shows a child in foster system well off to the wrong path being transformed from love and lessons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the Three Wolf Moon shirt of rottentomatoes. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Handles topic of partner physical abuse. Madea to the rescue and it turns out well! And some good laughs too Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member no, no just no, don't watch that movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Sometimes the acting sucks and maybe not enough Madea but this movie is way better than Tyler Perry's first movie in the franchise. This movie has a better story, more Madea, and was a step in the right direction. I do wish that it was filmed in a better way, the cuts feel unnatural many times.
