Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Lead characters are fully realized, if never exactly likable. Feb 15, 2020 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times The actors give their characters a resonance beyond the symbolic, but the action doesn't quite transcend the stagy setup. Rated: 3/5 Oct 25, 2012 Full Review Jon Caramanica New York Times A sweet, sometimes dull and certainly overlong film ... Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 11, 2012 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Has the challenge of taking place almost exclusively within the confines of a not very fancy bathroom. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 15, 2020 Full Review Brandon Judell GreenCine Seldom has a great film accomplished so much with so little. Well, that's if you consider an insanely quotable screenplay so little. Nov 12, 2012 Full Review Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald Madrid, 1987 operates on a dizzying number of levels - as a romantic comedy, a sex farce, a study of culture clash, ageism and idealism. Audience Member The problem with films like this for American audiences is that viewers assume that films are "transparent" and that what they "see" is what there is to see. Unfortunately US film viewers are often unaware of the context, and the context in this case is everything. The film's title is "Madrid 1987". That date points to 12 years after Franco's dictatorship ended, one of the longest in Europe (1936-1975). Angela's father is a high patent military man, and the dialogue (as well as his repressive attitude towards his daughter) points to his connection to the previous regime. Suárez, who is mentioned in the dialogue, was the man responsible for the transition from fascist dictatorship to democracy, and allusion is made to his role and courage when a military coup was staged to return to dictatorship. Miguel, the journalist, is clearly someone on the left, but he is also bitter, crabby, and he thinks the new generation, which has grown up with far more freedoms, "knows nothing", a common feeling for those who grew up under dictatorships in dealing with the next generation. This girl is not a "victim" - she was curious, she toyed with the idea of seducing the older, famous man, and she takes her clothes off of her own free will (aside from beginning by accepting his invitation to go to his friend's apt...). This girl is sure of herself and her sexuality and her seductiveness. Their dialogue throughout the film is outstanding, and their nakedness a metaphor for confronting each other, and oh she gives as good as she gets. She is young and very beautiful, he is decrepit (amazingly courageous of José Sacristan, one of Spain's great actors, to show himself naked like this). The film ends with HER, not him. And she has just said that she hopes her generation will do better than his. Will they? The film is from 2012, and invites that question. Have they, 25 years later? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Despicable ,Repulsive, ambiguous and none sense verb. A truly piece of BS, Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review harry r This movie is grungy. It will make your skin crawl especially with his manipulation of the young girl in the shower. This is neither romantic nor a comedy, it is an old man's attempt to get some by distorting her view of reality to get between her legs. It is nothing more than his attempt to whittle down her resolve and destroy her hopes and dreams with his hopeless portrait of reality at his age. It degrades the relationship between men and women down to his singular goal and makes everything in life a trade to get something you want. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is what we used to call a perfect date movie, now I guess a perfect Netflix-and-chill movie: A good film that is almost transcendent in its eroticism, but not just about sex, so your love interest may be turned on but not think that's all you want. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member El film de las pullas. Cada suceso que ocurre en ese pequeño baño tiene su significado, que estén desnudos ya dice una cosa. Pero más vale verlo, y sumergirte en las palabras de Miguel, que el guion es oro puro. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member taboo, disgusting, yet beautifully presented.
