The punchlines aren’t in your face, but instead, they kind of slide in through the back door of your mind, making you laugh raucously but also think more intensely about the points that Martin is trying to make.

Martin acknowledges at one point they’re perhaps preaching to the choir in the theater, but perhaps more than a few viewers unfamiliar with Martin will happen upon their special and learn a thing or two, too. At least that’s my sappy hope.

Not sure how this comedian made it on Netflix, sorry but Mae Martin isn't funny. I watched it, was totally bored to tears, now I know why I've never heard of her.

Mae is always a relatable, lovable, on-stage character. Their brand of clumsy sincere jest is still working its charm. It doesn't always, fully land - but I don't think it's entirely intended to. I don't think this is their best work, but it's still funnier, more genuine and moving than a lot of comedian who have a way bigger audience and platform. Definitely worth a watch.

It ends with a whimper when it needed a bang. If the audience misses the point of the long story that is your closer, you need to work on it more. Begging "You truly must get on board" called to mind Jeb Bush saying "Please clap". Up until that point, it was OK: low-energy storytelling like a lot of stand-up these days, but with some amusing insights. Unfortunately, not a good introduction to the large Netflix audience.
