Gregory Ratoff directs but the influence of Welles can be felt beyond his mesmerizing presence, in the shadowy style and sensibility of the film. At least in the scenes featuring Welles.

It's hard to believe an Orson Welles movie could be so crass.

A wandering gypsy carnival healer (Welles) discovers an aptitude for hypnotism and soon is on a quest for power ... and love. Will he topple the throne itself? Mellow drama for a costumer, yet and still better than most of this genre even though tongue-in-cheek. I'd never even heard of it before.

Orsoen Welles gives a mean-spritied performance, but the French costume drama doesn't really cut it, lacking interest in the plot after a while.
