so much fuss about that movie.. :/ awful acting. although, music was chosen alright and i somewhat liked camerawork.
P.S. Anyone, who thinks "father" is a cool guy, needs a therapy.

Highly immoral. In any civilized country Mart Laisk would be in jail for assisting a suicide, not acting in a movie by the director who endorses his views! No wonder the mother of the child hates Kõusaar. It's only human.

don't know anyone who went to see this movie. I don't know anyone who wanted to see it! When the truth about it came out on TV and newspapers here in Estonia people were outraged. Everyone I know agrees with the court decision.
Thank god there are privacy laws in civilized countries, and since Estonia now is also part of European Union it is very important to make sure these international laws are working in our country too. What would happen to us if our medical conditions or private problems were splattered all over the screen with our real names involved???? What Kõusaar did is unforgivable. No one cares anymore if movie is good or bad. He reputation is ruined forever, she just doesn't want to admit it.
From now on the Magnus movie won't be shown abroad either because it has been band worldwide! End of international festivals, end of lying. Time for the director to concentrate on a new movie and try to prove that she is worth talking about without yet another scandal being involved.

If Kõusaar shot a movie like this in United States she would have ended up eaten alive, sued for millions of dollars by the mother of the boy. And rightly so.
I am an Estonian who lives in United States (currently on vacation in Tallin!) writing this review because I happened to waste my time and popcorn money on this really bad film in Seattle, during the international film festival last month. I didn't know anything about it being band in Estonia but was equally disgusted by the "Father" character (pun intended), celebrated by Kõusaar. I found out about the scandal around it only once I got here. This film "inspired by true events", with the father more or less playing himself, should be band forever, not just for 7 years. I am a parent myself and I hate how Kõusaar's favorite character in her feature seams to be Mart Laisk. Disgusting, full stop.
"Kousaar's behavior is despicable, and the fact that she tries to cover it up with an excuse of "producing art" does not make it any better," says famous Estonian journalist Kalli Muule

There are not so many films that would haunt me for hours and days after watching them, but "Magnus" is definitely one of those rare cases. The film hypnotizes you with its sheer sincerity and poetic beauty. The intimate way how the father and son are shown, their fears, doubts and dreams, their awkward attempts to communicate. This film reminded me of my own personal pains, as I also happened to become a mother when I was too young and focused on my career, rather than on my daughter. "Magnus" should be mandatory to all would-be parents! One of the most subtle, humane and socio critical films which I have recently seen.
