Audience Member The Tin Mine (Maha'lai muang rae) is a 2005 Thai biographical drama film directed and written by Jira Maligool. It is adapted from short stories by Ajin Panjapan and his semi-autobiographical account of growing up in a mining camp in Kapong District of Phang Nga Province from 1949 to 1953. It stars Pijaya Vachajitpan, Donlaya Mudcha, Sonthaya Chitmanee, Anthony Howard Gould as Sam, Ajin Panjapan as himself, Jaran Petcharoen, Niran Sattar as John, Jumpol Thongtan and Bill O'Leary as Tom. It was distributed by GMM Tai Hub. The Tin Mine was the official entry from Thailand for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards. The film was made on a budget of 70 million baht. Vision wrote: "John is a G. He is too hilarious. The tin mine is brilliant. The boss is genuine. The story, direction, cinematography and comedy is on point. Admire the mine and how all the stories correlate around the mine. Very destructive and calming at times. powerful performances all around, especially by Pijaya Vachajitpan. Four fries!" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/11/25 Full Review Jonathan H A must see gem! Beautifully filmed and acted by a largely unknown cast, this Thai coming of age movie based on the best selling memoirs of the main character has remarkable heart and, although set in the late 1940s, much relevance to the problems of today's youth taking their first steps into the "real world". For some reason (maybe the gentle pace) it reminds me somewhat of Spirit of The Beehive with its depiction of innocence in a rural world on the point of change. See it on Netflix (or was in September 2023). Don't miss it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow but well-acted drama from Thailand, about a privileged young man sent to do hard labor in the mines of Southern Thailand in the 1940s.
