Audience Member The worst kid of film: pretentious, but without *any* depth. James Franco directed himself, in one of the most annoying performances I've seen in a while. Yuck. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member There's some unique genius to MALADIES, but the greater part of it seems to be a series of thrown together bits and themes which hope to provoke the art house appreciators into taking something profound from the film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member James Franco is powerful! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member James Franco, Fallon Goodson and Catherine Keener at their best! A bit of doubt remains on the character of Delmar...who is he? what does he represent? Great photography while the plot misses that 'extra' substance. Overall pretty good Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall this film was enjoyable to watch. The characters are very unique in all the things that are going on with them. It seems that most of the characters are flawed in different ways, which all seem to be sort of mental disabilities (mainly James Franco's characters and Fallon Goodson's). There was great humor in the film and David Strathairn's character "Delmar" was quite funny to watch. With great performances done by all the actors, I expected this to be a very good movie. I was lead to disappointment near the end of the film to when the things I was hoping to find out about the characters never came to light, which included many plot holes which lead to things being a little confusing. Carter's directing (Yes, this movie isn't directed by James Franco as RT says) was very interesting and unique, but the overall story seemed to lack content. I was very drawn into all of the characters, but I was expecting some sort of large transformation to occur that would make me feel at ease. Other than that, my overall impression of the movie was good. I can recommend this to people who are fans of James Franco and Catherine Keener, and also Fallon Goodson. Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online For what it's worth, there's nothing outrageously awful about the film... It's just utterly bland. Rated: D+ Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Jessica Kiang The Playlist ...we basically wanted to punch the film in the face. Rated: D+ Mar 21, 2014 Full Review Leah Greenblatt Entertainment Weekly A mess that will no doubt meet a merciful box office death. Rated: D Mar 21, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com For a film that seems to be exploring the difficulty in creative expression, Maladies seems afflicted by an inability to say much at all. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 29, 2019 Full Review Carmen Gray Screen International Despite its big-name cast (Catherine Keener is on impressive form), most viewers will find it an impossibly pretentious, drifting picture that, while brimful of pseudo-philosophising, lacks substance where it matters. Sep 14, 2016 Full Review Dan Schindel Movie Mezzanine The only thing more notable than Maladies's pretentiousness is how harmless that pretentiousness feels.
