Phil Hoad Guardian Mbakam’s feminist parable has a winning integrity and grace. Rated: 4/5 May 6, 2024 Full Review Beatrice Loayza New York Times Mbakam hits a remarkable balance. The sociopolitical truths that make up Pierrette’s losing streak are evident, without the miserable patronizing so common in films about struggle in Africa. Jan 25, 2024 Full Review Alex Heeney Seventh Row Like her documentaries, Mambar Pierrette is not just a character portrait but a look at how colonialism continues to affect the lives of everyone in the country in ways big and small. Oct 5, 2024 Full Review Edward Frumkin The Film Stage Mbakam’s minimalist aesthetics demolish the binary between nonfiction and fiction to reflect Pierrette’s flawed, humane intentions across the nurturers from many settings. Rated: A- Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Shar Tan In Review Online The drudgery of financial precarity exists alongside moments of joy, which prevents Mbakam’s film from being overly gratuitous in depicting the continual cruelty that Mambar is dealt. Jan 24, 2024 Full Review Sarah Manvel In Their Own League What makes “Mambar Pierrette” special is how ordinary it is. This is perhaps damning with faint praise, but to see what feels like a mumblecore indie movie about a struggling single mother in Douala, Cameroon is just magnificent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Bahad j I am very happy that the movie shows us the steps and choices that are necessary in the life of a great person. I like the movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Audience Member One of the greatest films that M’Bakam made Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Sandy L Absolutely loved this movie. Saw it on Amazon a few days ago having not heard much about it and over this easter weekend have watched it twice more. It's effing funny, its tense, its romantic but mostly its just got great performances. Would never have thought to put these set of actors together but the result is much greater than the sum of its parts. Def check it out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Simon H Seen this movie 4 times and it feels stronger with every view. Think it's the slow slow burn of the love affair that makes it all work.
