As the British military prepares to invade Sicily during World War II, intelligence agent Ewen Montagu (Clifton Webb) hatches a cunning plan to fool Germany into believing the Allies' true target is Greece. Concocting a fictitious British officer named Maj. William Martin, Montagu gathers false top-secret documents and personal letters to plant upon a corpse that will wash ashore in Spain. But the investigations of a German undercover agent (Stephen Boyd) could potentially expose the fraud.

Mark W Very well made WW2 thriller based on true events. Moves away from being factual towards the end but that’s OK. Well worth a watch. Look out for Doctor Who alumni William Russell. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Audience Member Ir is a relief to come across a quality movie filmed almost like the documentary of a genuine wartime event, and a welcome respite from current whizz bang action movies. The film is also a precious document of how London looked and how people behaved not long after the war. The buildings were still blackened, the smart stucco terraces had peeling paint, people's manners were formal, speech was precise and intelligible and young couples did not automatically leap into bed on first meeting. A treasure of a movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review S R An excellent WW2 drama based on real events. Stellar cast, good direction, cinematography, music and overall production. It was recommended by a friend Rich and it was worth it. RUS. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review philip w What can I say — this is the top notch — better than the new one — great enjoy Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member An engaging thriller that takes a surprising turn after the half way point. All the actors seem well cast apart from Gloria Graham, whose dramatic style is at odds with the restraint of the British cast members. A pity this film film was not made by Alfred Hitchcock as it was perfect material for his style. Ronald Neame's workmanlike direction and a old fashioned film score do let the film down. Worth watching for its incredible true story and as a companion piece to the recent remake with Colin Firth. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A very good movie which takes it's story very seriously, as it should. How much of the second half of this film is true I don't know, but it made for a tense final third. If only all war movies took this approach to their content.
