Robert Daniels 812filmreviews It's sweet to the point of ugly crying with bittersweetness Rated: 3/4 Aug 26, 2018 Full Review Jessica Kiang Variety We don't even notice how deep Okada has driven her storytelling dagger until she pulls it out in the end, and the tears come, adding, to the bitterness and sweetness of this moving and strange little fable, a hefty dose of salt. Jul 21, 2018 Full Review Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader This eerie and affecting feature debut from writer-director Mari Okada blends fantasy and coming-of-age stories. Jul 20, 2018 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Mari Okada directs and pens a film that revolves around three concepts that intertwine and combine to a rather unique presentation: Love, time and memory. Matthew R Over long. Over wrought. Over acted. You can kind of see where they had an idea for a story, but never were able to execute on it either in the writing or the directing (several of the ending scenes are out of the best dramatic order). Animation is beautiful. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Toats M the first half of the movie was very well done, fantastic characters, amazing direction and the animation was top notch all the way through. however once the second half starts the whole experience starts to fall apart. the pacing starts to move at breakneck speed. ariel, the son character becomes very unlikable and at one point had somewhat of an Oedipus complex. the end is when the whole experience gets completely ruined. the movie is about motherhood and the true nature of a mother's love, however the two main mothers of the movie both decide to abandon each of their children in the end. the main character doesn't see her son after the finale until he is old and on his death bed. the other character wasn't allowed to see her daughter and the whole movie she talks about how much she loves her and wants to hold her in her arms. when we get this reunion she decides that since she is free now she won't embrace her daughter and attempts to kill herself by jumping off the top of a castle. once saved by the main character she leaves never saying more that three sentences to her daughter who she supposedly loves so much. she then never sees her daughter again. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Tom F Epic world building, beautifully applied to tell a story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Hayaku S This anime is worth to watch, and give some point, not like other anime. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review 3rd D An amazing movie with eye-watering scenes, stunning music, a beautiful storylines, excellent script and positive message. Maquia would be an excellent movie to watch on Mother's Day thanks to its focus on motherhood. It's a movie filled with bliss. The visual and sound design is amazing, making Maquia a brilliant work of art. There is an immense attention to detail and a unique realism to the animation too. Overall, I'd highly recommend Maquia. It is a movie that takes you on an exciting and thrilling journey, while inspiring your own reflection and (hopefully) growth as a person. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review ANI_AZIZHAMMADK. This Movie makes me cried 6 times! 6 TIMES! ARE YOU CRAZY! after watching this film I also called my mother and say thank you too THAT'S CRAZYYY!!!! This director must be a voodoo On a serious side, this movie is a bitter-sweet movie that has a strong character complexion and connection. but one thing that bugged me off in this movie, probably the timeskip and the other character with her own daughter, I still don't understand that, but the main stories kept me in touch. it's a nice mothers day movie. This still probably one of the best film that can put my film shelf on a spotlight. its a cinema-piece baby... p.s don't forgot to call your mother. I don't want none of y'all crying to this movie and still don't call your mother for thanking them that you were still alive till this day! and if your mother dead visit them graves will ya.
