Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) [Marcella's] whole point was: cooking is simple and you can prepare this meal while you're telling a story. And that's what they do across the arc of this film and I just loved it. Jun 5, 2025 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety "Marcella,” Peter Miller‘s formulaic but enjoyable documentary, ultimately presents classic Italian cuisine as a mistress to whom even doyennes like Hazan are beholden. May 12, 2025 Full Review Cortlyn Kelly RogerEbert.com This film doesn’t give us Hazan’s best recipes; it uses Marcella’s approach to cooking to memorably tell her story. Rated: 3/4 May 9, 2025 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots A documentary that indulges in its appetite for nostalgia and inspiration with a heartfelt portrait of a woman who revolutionized the American kitchen. Jun 11, 2025 Full Review Dorothy Woodend The Tyee (British Columbia) The bare facts of the film, like Hazan’s recipes, are straightforward, but the magic takes place when food, memory and connection transform the basic ingredients into something numinous. Jun 5, 2025 Full Review Gerald Peary Arts Fuse Several of the most delightful scenes in Marcella feature young chefs, Hazan acolytes, making her most iconic dishes. Baked chicken done with salt and two lemons sewn inside. That’s all. May 15, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

GL A delightful portrait of a groundbreaking chef and cookbook writer. It'll be in theatres, on streaming, and will be broadcast on PBS American Masters in July. Do not miss it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Donna C I lived in Sicily for 2 1/2 years and enjoyed the experience of learning a few dishes from Italian Nonna’s. I was always struck by their calmness and patience as they cooked. I see this in the film about Marcella Hazan. She cooked with ‘soft hands’, bringing ingredients together to create something new and delicious. I’ve watched it twice and can’t wait to see it again with friends. Do yourself a favor and learn to make Marcella’s Tomato Gravy. Simple, delicious, and a recipe to pass on to my Grandchilldren. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review Audience Member This is such an inspiring film! Marcella arrived in the US with little English and minimal cooking knowledge and changed the way Americans cook Italian food. It makes you want to run to your best local market and start cooking! There is an incredible lifetime packed into this hour and 38 minute film. I highly recommend it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Kim U Marcella is a beautiful and heartfelt film, a story that feels like a warm embrace. If you love to cook, enjoy watching cooking shows, or simply appreciate a story rooted in love and tradition, this is a must-watch. Beyond the food, it’s a celebration of family—of the deep connection between Marcella, her husband, Victor and their son, Guiliano. Their marriage could have been a movie all on its own, filled with moments that remind us how love and passion can shape a life. By the time the film ends, you might find yourself searching for flights to Italy, ready to visit the cooking school where her son carries on her legacy. It’s not just about learning recipes—it’s about experiencing the warmth and wisdom that Marcella so generously shared with the world. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/25 Full Review Margaret T A great story and interesting to learn about where Italian food in America comes from Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
