      Critics Consensus

Martyrs flays off everything that gave the original its icy horrific beauty, leaving us an empty, pointless remake.

Jeffrey P Remake of the French film of the same name, came on immediately after the original and while I knew the title was the same I was surprised to learn it was a remake. It being in english was good but the improvements stopped there, far less effective than the predecessor, much fewer twists, and less shockingly brutal. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Audience Member An American cash grab version of a masterpiece that entirely missed the point of the original. I wish I had never watched this one as it now soils my view of the original. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Bad acting, didn't get the same feeling at all. Original was so much better. Before Lucie kills the family you don't even have the vibe that she is scared and traumatized. Don't watch this movie! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member The original was perfect, Hollywood needs to end the remakes. Especially of perfect movies that aren't even old enough yet to warrant even trying to recapture that lighting in a bottle. Please stop it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Mistakenly rented this piece of trash thinking it was the 2008 original. What a waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A terrible waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) It's deeply unappetising - insipid for much of its length, before soullessly revelling in the agony for its final stretch. Rated: 1/5 Apr 3, 2016 Full Review Henry Barnes Guardian What's left after the gore is stripped away is a mildly bloody, meatless horror. Rated: 2/5 Mar 31, 2016 Full Review Anton Bitel Little White Lies The icky messiness that gave Laugier's film its visceral impact has been watered down and sanitised here, while the genuinely transcendent ending of the original is banally reduced to a eulogy for friendship. Feb 29, 2016 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie What Martyrs amounts to is a cheap mess, an attempt to adapt a work more focused on ideas into something designed to provide thrills and action, and the clash between the two modes is an ugly one. Rated: 3.5/10 May 24, 2019 Full Review Trace Thurman Bloody Disgusting Martyrs, surprisingly, isn't a complete misfire. It is bold enough to go in a different direction than the original, though it certainly doesn't best that film. Rated: 3/5 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Matt Glasby Total Film Not what you could call bad - just depressingly pointless - it follows similarly shrieky beats into unpleasant and underwhelming territory.
