Critics Consensus

Misguided from stem to stern, Mary wastes the talents of an outstanding cast -- and makes a soggy mess of its supernatural horror story.

Rex Reed Observer It's a watery tale of supernatural nonsense at sea as lost and immobile as a beached mackerel. Rated: 1/4 Oct 14, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Oldman and Mortimer play the drama in "Mary" well. Too bad they don't get much chance to play the horror. Oct 14, 2019 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com Mary's concept -- and it's a good one! -- doesn't blossom into the truly spooky, the truly eerie, even though it's given countless chances to do so. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 11, 2019 Full Review Rubén Romero Santos Cinemanía (Spain) Interesting, but not original. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 2/5 Jul 2, 2020 Full Review Laura Pacheco Mora EscribiendoCine A failed and mediocre horror movie. Jelisije J The premise of this story has been done a million times and yet this film exists to offer anything new or exciting. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review J. S 4% is harsh. I like films about boating or cruises. It isn't the best film, but parts of it are well done with good performances by the actors. This is an example of when I don't always trust Rotten Tomatoes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Kyle M Despite a changed setting, this is derivatively one of the worst structurally standardized haunts to manifest in ridiculed disappointment that squandered the opportunity including somehow fooling the cast to act beneath their caliber. (C-) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/31/23 Full Review alma m I thought it was mysterious dark, with an unexpected take overs by dark spirits that look for the weak & frail in order to survive. My only take on this, all the changes that occurred were horrible once being on a boat with a mythical creature at the front of the boat, and the father image just wants to give up on the child, as if he is somehow over taken as well by the mythical creature. It's like they have no real backbone from both parents. The mom doesn't want to live the son, but does. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Julian I So close... the movie looks great, great visuals. But the storyline is weak and lacks more backstory maybe? It never really drew me in to the plot and right down to the ending it falls short of substance. The story felt rushed without much thought, like a made for TV thing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/07/23 Full Review steve d Must have spent all its money on the cast. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
