My only take on this, all the changes that occurred were horrible once being on a boat with a mythical creature at the front of the boat, and the father image just wants to give up on the child, as if he is somehow over taken as well by the mythical creature. It's like they have no real backbone from both parents. The mom doesn't want to live the son, but does.
