What to Know

Critics Consensus

By the power of Grayskull and with a little help from its self-deprecating script and spirited cast, Masters of the Universe is a delightful adventure that finds the humanity in He-Man.

A glossy, action spectacle that wears its heart on its jacked sleeve, Masters of the Universe is a stud of a film.

Was totally swept away by this super vibrant, weird and gleeful romp. It's downright ridiculous but ridiculous works when the cast and crew wholly get the kind of movie they're making and are enthusiastic about going all out to bring it to life. Go to Full Review

The box-office might not be by their side, but Mattel managed to deliver another fun romp well beyond what the source material deserves. The hit or miss humor is aided by a great soundtrack and a childishly balanced tone. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Do I think 'Masters of the Universe' is a terrible film? Absolutely not. But do I think that it is a movie that is going to be remembered a year from now or even two years from now? I'm not so sure. Go to Full Review

This has no right to be as fun and funny as it is... The film embraces its origins; it’s childish and campy, but self-aware... Everyone in the film seems to be having the best time, and that shines through in the hilarious comedy throughout. Go to Full Review

Natasha 10h Really great movie to watch See more Gaetan 21h Really cool flick. Done really well and you can tell that they really paid attention to the source material. The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously it it’s also not overly campy. See more Matt 1d It was very nostalgic brought me back to my childhood. See more Andrew G 2d It was fun. Not too serious. It’s He-Man, it’s pretty good for a He-Man quality movie. See more Matt R 2d Had a Friday off work and decided to catch a movie my wife wouldn’t hold against me for watching solo. If you grew up with He-Man toys scattered across your bedroom floor, turned random sticks into the Sword of Power, and yelled, “I HAVE THE POWER!” at the top of your lungs… this movie was made for you. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel—it embraces what made Masters of the Universe fun in the first place. Seeing those childhood heroes and villains brought back to life on the big screen was pure nostalgia. I found myself grinning more than once just recognizing characters I hadn’t thought about in years. No spoilers, but if Eternia was ever part of your childhood imagination, this is worth the trip to the theater. It’s the kind of movie that reminds you why so many of us wanted to be He-Man… even if our “Sword of Power” was really just a broomstick from the garage. See more Paige D 2d I enjoyed this movie as a fun action and adventure film with some good comedic moments. Nicholas Galitzine is great in this role and I thoroughly enjoyed Camila Mendes’s character as well. The side step on the romance was annoying and not funny. Certain jokes were overdone and could have been cut down to give them more punch. The midpoint speech Idris Elba’s character gave on masculinity was fantastic. The ending speech the sorceress gave about why He-Man was different than past heroes fell flat, as well as the emotional moment between He-Man and his father. We should have seen He-man during his time on earth, striving to be strong and training to be what he thought his father wanted him to be, and also how he was different than past heroes. Instead we were told these facts, not shown, so it didn’t quite make sense. Overall, decent fun movie, and I would be interested in a sequel if they worked out some kinks. See more Read all reviews
