Namrata Joshi Outlook The sfx bombardment can't hide a lack of sense and substance. Rated: 2/4 Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Alexander Walker London Evening Standard The whole film may be more than a bit suspect cerebrally, with dime-store philosophy, potted mysticism and cut-price otherworldliness, but visually it gives full value as a virtuoso workout for your senses. Jan 10, 2018 Full Review Barbara Ellen The Times (UK) Indeed, if you loved the first Matrix and its mix of comic-book angst, martial arts, virtual reality, video-game punch-ups, pop philosophy, biblical subtext, romance, tragedy and pathos, then you won't be disappointed. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review David Reddish CBR In a genre dominated by fan service, “requels” (see also, The Force Awakens), and movies devoid of philosophical dilemmas or subtext, The Matrix Reloaded feels like a unicorn. The Wachowskis made it as a personal statement. Rated: 3/4 May 5, 2025 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand They don't come up with anything new, but it's bigger, louder, and mighty impressive, even if the dialogue sounds more and more like a preprogrammed video game. Sep 9, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film entertains despite its structural shortcomings, as the Wachowskis have created a cinematic world that’s a pleasure to experience, even though it’s not as satisfying as its predecessor. Gareth v A sequel that’s more style than substance — impressive in moments, but never gripping and riddled with some ordinary acting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Tavis R Loved the first film in the series, but this one is terrible. Somewhere between the hokey screenwriting, terrible CGI, and way too long fight scenes, this film lost my suspension of disbelief. It just feels masturbatory. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Nick P Neo upgraded to Ultra Instinct and somehow found time for romance and kung fu mid-air. Confused? Good. Welcome to Reloaded. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Andrew P. Probably my least favorite in the trilogy but still the greatest. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Kevin P A mostly solid sequel that has insane action sequences mixed in with some wooden sci-fi schmaltz. The Agent Smith Clone fight and highway chase scene were both awesome visual delights with great choreography. The Twins were great villains with cool "ghost" powers, but their screentime was so short+ Agent Smith infecting people with malware turning them into him was also a cool new way to escalate him as a threat. I also liked the Oracle's discussion with Neo about destiny vs free will. Paralleled well with Neo's heart to heart with the Zion counselor about machine reliance and the meaning of control. Same goes for Neo's visually memorable confrontation with the Matrix's Architect with the hundreds of TVs in the background surrounded by a blank white void. My only major complaints are that the side characters from Zion are mostly corny/boring, the cave rave party was weird, the acting from Neo & Trinity is more stilted this time, and Trinity kind of devolves into a love interest and damsel near the end (but thankfully she still gets to be cool some of the time). But fortunately, these faults are way less tiresome than in Revolutions. And the cool action scenes and trippy philosophical visuals are more than enough to make up for it. It's not on the same level as the original, but it still has a lot going for it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/25 Full Review Rami A Compared to the first film, this sequel's effects improved the action. It also features stronger acting, more engaging writing, and heightened suspense. The performances bring the characters to life in a way that keeps you invested in the story. However, like the original, I still don't consider it among the greatest films of all time. While they are certainly entertaining and enjoyable to watch, they lack the depth and artistry that typically define cinematic masterpieces. Overall, they're fun distractions but not films that will leave a lasting impact. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
