Critics Consensus

Matthias and Maxime enchants almost as much as it frustrates, although Xavier Dolan fans may appreciate seeing the writer-director working at a more restrained pitch.

Dave Calhoun Time Out If the overall effect is a little basic and under-worked, this is still a heartfelt, honest film. Rated: 3/5 Aug 31, 2020 Full Review Jason Shawhan AV Club This is a film with big emotions and swoon-worthy wet hair moments, and it finds unexpected places in the subconscious to settle. Rated: B+ Aug 31, 2020 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Ultimately, the revelation here is not so much Dolan's more contemplative approach to film-making, but the subtlety and sensitivity of his performance. Rated: 4/5 Aug 30, 2020 Full Review Sukanya Verma Rediff.com Canadian auteur Xavier Dolan examines sexual discoveries and doubts stirred within two childhood friends... Aug 29, 2024 Full Review Fernando E. Juan Lima EscribiendoCine The shouting, the screaming music, the supposedly poetic moments, and the slow-motion shots seem almost a caricature of what Dolan knew to do (or seem to know how to do) in the past. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 2/10 Jun 27, 2023 Full Review David Reddish Queerty Dolans usual themes of internalized homophobia, hypermasculinity, closet case lusting andin particularrage against mother figures abound, as do individual scenes of intense visual beauty and powerful acting. Filipe M I’m writing this long after watching this film. I’ve got to be honest I don’t remember much of the story but one thing I remember is how I felt watching it. There were moments of sadness, where I felt bad for them, and other moments of warmth and love and great feelings. Those moments that make you want to take a deep breath because in someway you were moved by the scene. Overall, it is a comfort movie. I’ll definitely watch it again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Eric D This is the first film that I have seen by Xavier Dolan. He should be very proud of this one in my humble opinion. I loved it and I loved the ending. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Andrea-Wilhelmine S It's a fresh new take on the classic "don't really know where I'm going with this" movie. But don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy Matthias & Maxine. Although it is told fast and some of it is confusing, then the story is beautiful and the movie has beautiful pictures and characters in it. The confusion of the two young men is so human and it makes me think of other young love series and movies - such as HBO's depiction of Conversations with Friends. But in contrast to that, this actually feels real, human and beautiful. I would recommend this movie :) But if you know you don't like an open ending then you will get disappointed ('Cause I hated that, probably because im a sucker for a happy ending) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/06/23 Full Review carli m Sensitive acting and one of the most beautiful love scenes I've seen in film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Real and beautiful. It shows the pain of growing up gay perfectly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Painfully shallow and slow, the fire potential in "Matthias & Maxime" is never really saisfied in a film that sandly ends up being just (other) Dolan's assemble of beautiful faces, visual glory and exasperating screenplay.
