Cody Corrall Chicago Reader What Maze gains in its depiction of history, it loses in emotional strength. Apr 9, 2020 Full Review Fionnuala Halligan Screen International Time is a healer, and this film educates as well as entertains. Jul 7, 2019 Full Review Cary Darling Houston Chronicle "Maze" doesn't have much action until the end and even that is fairly muted and low-key compared to what might be expected from a Hollywood movie on the same topic. But that's exactly what makes "Maze" impressive. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 26, 2019 Full Review Mark Dujsik Mark Reviews Movies Writer/director Stephen Burke doesn't take a side and, instead, simply looks on with lament at the toll of the strife. Rated: 3/4 Apr 12, 2019 Full Review Andrea Chase Killer Movie Reviews Mixes the suspense of plotting an escape dependent on split-second timing with the psychological games the prisoners play with the guards and with each other. The result is a film that is gripping for reasons not usually associated with suspense films. Rated: 4/5 Apr 5, 2019 Full Review Paul Whitington Irish Independent Stephen Burke's story is competently told and the escape itself is nicely handled. Audience Member Slow build. Thoughtful film. Great performances all around. Excellent direction, cinematography and editing. Must watch if for nothing but the historical perspective. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm very confused by the high ratings this film has achieved; it is fundamentally flawed in so many ways it's difficult to view it as "good". Firstly, the pacing is so slow from beginning to end you can't help but be bored, even during the escape. Secondly, there is no connection to any of the characters created so empathy is almost impossible - there's no backstory, so unless you have an understanding of the historical situation you won't understand what's going on - the prison life isn't "bad" so there's no imperative for escape - and there's no character development so you aren't rooting for anyone and don't care about the outcome. Thirdly, there's nothing compelling about the plot, acting, script, cinematography or even the score. Fourthly, the conflict in Northern Ireland has a brutal history well worth sharing, and yet this film somehow lacks both emotion and education. Sure, the escape of 38 prisoners from a maze-like prison sounds interesting and emotive...but this film perfectly captures just how dull the actual events were. It's not necessarily that the film is "bad" per se, it's just not a story worth telling as a film because it's not captivating. Perhaps as a documentary or as a part of a film depicting the overall conflict in greater detail? But not as a single event. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting prison escape movie based on the real events of the 1983 escape from the Maze prison by IRA members. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/09/19 Full Review Audience Member I would rathe watch paint dry. Not maybe if they sold it more as a documentary. I don't know. Glad I Rental instead of going to see it at the movies. I rented it because tomatoes gave it such a high rating, they have lost my trust. By the way I am an old Irish person and remember this happening. It was stupid then and my mind hasn't changed. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Great accurate account of the breakout by IRA prisoners. Wonderful gripping movie. Highly recommend Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/19 Full Review Audience Member Great film, as an Irish woman who remembers this happening, I found it deeply moving and thought provoking.
