Monica Castillo RogerEbert.com There's a lot going on in the movie without ever really exploring those topics beyond a cursory mention. Rated: 2/4 Sep 4, 2020 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter Shakespeare scholars have often labeled Measure for Measure a "problem play," a term that has been given multiple meanings; Ireland's tonally ambivalent film fits one of those meanings pretty well. Sep 3, 2020 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Convoluted and ponderously paced, "Measure for Measure" relies too often on sentimental music and narrative shorthand. Sep 3, 2020 Full Review Robin Holabird KUNR (Reno, NV) By all measures, this Measure for Measure totals up into an absorbing cinematic experience. Jul 19, 2021 Full Review Witney Seibold Critically Acclaimed Podcast Only vaguely connected to Shakespeare's work, this Aussie crime caper lacks energy and drive. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse The mix-and-match of love story and social commentary sometimes feels strained and melodramatic, but director Paul Ireland offers up good performances - particularly from Weaving - that smooth over the film's rough spots. Audience Member Outstanding movie with some deep messages that work well with the great acting performances. The adapdation is clever and makes it very relevant to todays society. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see - Loved it!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Strong performances deliver a strong story that is a relative updating of Shakespeare's masterpiece. This is worth a look. Loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member An awkward Australian independent film that hides behind an ambiguous trailer, while providing alluring promises of grandeur through its heavy reliance on Shakespeare and Hugo Weaving. Set against a daytime soap Melbourne backdrop, with minimal performances by said Hugo, contrary to trailer promises, the film is an excellent exercise in cringeworthiness, exacerbated by nameless local acts who fail to match Hugo's presense, and a color palette/ shot sequence taken right out of daytime television. Think Elrond meets Home and Away. Despite it's lackluster performance, local Victorians are sure to laude this 5th place runner for years to come simply for its proximity to home.
