Over the course of 12 minutes, the film visually and progressively observes the distinction within martial arts of the beauty of its dance-like motions and the violence of its gestures.

Reminding the choreography capacity of the camera and her admiration for dancing, a fine line is drawn between violence and art, something that began to be appreciated by western audiences when the wuxia genre started to propagate.

Didn't strike me as very interesting. It dragged on for far too long. The sword sequence is pretty cool though. This is probably my least favorite Deren.

A Chinese martial artist demonstrates his various moves, and halfway through, the film runs backwards, which I didn't even notice. It achieves a meditative effect from the constant motion of the actor, and despite some moments of aggressiveness, the sheer grace of what is being captured is more beautiful than violent.
