In 1970s Australia, Grace's life is troubled by misfortune and loss. After their mother dies during pregnancy, she and her twin brother, Gilbert, are raised by their paraplegic-alcoholic former juggler father, Percy. Despite a life filled with love, tragedy strikes anew when Percy passes away in his sleep. The siblings are forcibly separated and thrust into separate homes. Gilbert finds himself in the care of a cruel evangelical family, while Grace, grappling with intense loneliness, gradually withdraws into her shell, much like the snails she adopts. As the years pass, and despite new disappointments and sorrows, a glimmer of hope emerges when she strikes up an enduring friendship with an elderly eccentric woman called Pinky.

Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald All the extremes are here -- sex, birth, death, cruelty and the remorseless exploitation of the vulnerable -- and the fact Elliott manages to extract such joy from this carnage makes his work remarkable. Rated: 4/5 Oct 17, 2024 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It’s a gorgeous film, but it’s also an emotionally intelligent movie, one that shifts and flows between comedy and tragedy, reminding us that life can only be lived forward. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 27, 2024 Full Review David Ehrlich indieWire It’s the kind of thing that would seem too cruel to be cute in real life, but is somehow redeemed here by the crudeness of Elliot’s clay, which loves its lumpy characters and finds a wealth of mottled beauty in a world that often seems ugly by design. Rated: B+ Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Cain Noble-Davies FILMINK (Australia) Elliot not only lives up to the artistic ethos of masters like Jan Švankmajer, but also the ideal of dramatic tragedy: expressing pain not to persist within it, but to purge it from the self and move forward with renewal. Oct 17, 2024 Full Review Ryan Guar Discussing Film Memoir of a Snail is a complex exploration of trauma, playing with unimaginable grief in the same breath as comical absurdity in the way only a masterful stop-motion film can. Rated: 5/5 Oct 17, 2024 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) Movies as completely realised as Memoir of a Snail demand and earn nothing less than a viewer’s complete attention.
