David Harris Spectrum Culture Mermaid would float better if Shalaveva had stuck with odd and quirky instead of the weird and disagreeable- at least in terms of the main character. Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Virgo V Mermaid (Rusalka) is a Russian 2007 fantasy comedy-drama film directed and written by Anna Melikyan. It is a loose adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale The Little Mermaid. It was a box office success in Russia, won numerous awards, including at Sundance Film Festival for best Dramatic Directing. The film was selected as the Russian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. Vision says the film Mermaid could have been more rounded and that the ending may be incomplete. The ending may be incomplete and may repel those who aren't familiar with the Rusalka story. Some say that the main character's performance could have been better. Vision says the main character's performance was excellent but the supporting actor could have done a better job. Vision mentions the film was charming, relatable, quirky and intelligent. It was visually stunning. Mermaid is a Russian fantasy film that is loosely based on The Little Mermaid and Rusalka. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Maryrose H Warning: SPOILER I would have given this 10 stars for great acting, great cinematography, great story - until the end. You are engaged in Alisa's story right from the start. She works her way from a terrible childhood, through adversity turning her life around to success at which point the director/writer evidently loses her mind and turns the movie into a social statement about how bad Russian drivers are by running the star over with a car going what looks like about 1000 miles an hour. On a busy city street. It's the eve of success but now she's dead. Oh, well, learn to drive better. The End. What disappointing, heartbreaking crap! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Audience Member What a shame that this film has not yet been rated on Rotten Tomatoes, while the hype of the Avatar circus atracts 252 reviews! Mermaid was a truly excellent film: a charming story, visually beautiful, funny, sad, well cast (especially the brilliant Mariya Shalaeva), and with a superb soundtrack that purposefully complemented the story. It just felt good to watch this film! I think James Cameron could learn a lot about movie making from Anna Melikyan. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member i was not expecting this movie to come into my life ever. but seeing as i have found an addiction to the sundance movie channel, it was only a matter of time before i saw this film. it is all spoken in russian but i can still relate to the main character. she is a bit quirky and finds a power in herself to make "wishes" come true. when she moves to the city of moskow she finds an interesting man andinstantaniously falls in love. to bad she is only seen as a little girl, and the man has no interest in her beside her ability to clean exceptionally well. granted this movie is slow and takes a bit of time to hook you, and the way it was filmed is different, it is a good movie and i enjoyed it very much. i find these types of movies to be way more interesting than our over glamafied hollywood movies.
