Audience Member Metallica always seemed to want to experiment throughout the 90's and beyond, with S&M, they set the bar even higher in terms of delivering a concert experience like no other. Metallica with a symphony, which was brilliantly conducted by Michael Kamen. This show is truly awesome to watch, but I preferred the Live Sh*t: Binge and Purge concerts, as those were filmed in Metallica's heyday. Nonetheless, this is a worthwhile concert experience that is sure to thrill the most demanding fan of the band. Sure, Metallica's "sellout" aspect will definitely be emphasized, but let's face it, their glory days are gone. They won't make another Ride The Lightning, Kill 'Em All or Master of Puppets. Now, they're a shell of their former self. They occasionally impress now and again, with 2008's Death Magnetic, it was a very fine return for the band. Now back to S&M, the band performs their most popular songs with the San Francisco Symphony, and it's an experience that will stick with you. The concert is very good, and Metallica's strength lies more in their concerts than on record, as they have been hit and miss quite frankly in the 90's, and only in the last few years recaptured that heaviness again. Forget that LULU ever happened, and enjoy the band live. This is one of their most interesting shows, only topped recently by their concert in Antarctica for a select few of lucky fans. Worth seeing if you're a fan of the band, it's a unique concert for what it is, even if it's not their greatest ever DVD. It is Metallica live with San Francisco symphony Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A very good show even if it was a little bit heavy on Load/Reload tunes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Not as pretentious and wasteful as I thought it would be. Certainly Michael Kamen is more opportunistic than artistic; which is why he may have taken the easy way out. Kamen's arrangements serve only as accompaniment to Metallica's already put-together performance. It would have been more interesting if let the reigns go more often and let the riffage be orchestra-based. What happens instead is that the orchestra fills the soundscape on a performance that Metallica didn't have to change themselves at all. Like Kirk's intro riff to "Bell Tolls". That could have been great if he shut up and let the symphony have it. It's still a higlight, though (when is it ever not in a Metallica show). Others include the new track "No Leaf Clover" and one of Hetfield's poppiest compositions, "Hero of the Day". Decent on Load, but excellent here.
