Haunted by H MEXICALI ROSE is painful to watch. Even at a one-hour run time, this film is about 55 minutes too long. The acting is stiff and wooden, the direction is static, the humor is badly dated (if it was even funny by 1929 standards), and it lacks any kind of suspense or emotional pull. It isn't even naughty enough to recommend as a pre-code movie. Only recommended for people (like myself) who are willing to sit through bad films to see how filmmaking evolved from silent to sound...and to see a rough, almost amateur performance by future Hollywood legend Barbara Stanwyck.
