Taylor L A cute coming-of-age comedy that's part Huck Finn, part Moonrise Kingdom. Not as much of a road movie as you might expect with a quick glance at the premise, but keeps puttering along based on the sweet and sincere friendship between its two main characters as they bounce around between rocky or unorthodox home lives, puberty, and a few unexpected encounters on their way across the French countryside, including some surprise surrealism (which is more the style you'd expect from Gondry, given some of his prior work). Sentiment mixed with some inventive writing and surprising subplots. (3/5) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/15/22 Full Review mark r Not enough of Gondry's magical realism stylings for my liking but still a fun coming-of-age road trip movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie us part coming of age part travelogue of two misfit French lads. Microbe is an artist and musician who's moniker is due to his small size while Gasoline who's father is a mechanic gets his name from the aroma of his petrol soaked clothes. They construct an unusual vehicle, part car part house and make their way around the French countryside meeting bizarre challenges evading the cops and overcoming obstacles along the way. The charm of this picture overcomes any reservations about its plausibility. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review nefasto r A charming buddy-on-the-road comedy that, with just a hint of strange, manage to stir away from the feeling of "Deja vu". Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review alan d Although this certainly is not everyone's cup of tea, the film resonated with me. The two leads are spectacular. Their budding friendship, entirely believable. The writing is exquisite. A joy from start to finish. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Kids not speaking English. Violet Lucca Film Comment Magazine Dramatizing the two boys' respective insecurities and strengths, Gondry has crafted a pair of loners who complement each other but aren't so outrageously different that their companionship feels forced. Sep 6, 2016 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times We appreciate the unique personalities of these two kids, and we're glad they found each other. Rated: 3/4 Jul 29, 2016 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times The laughs are sometimes bigger than expected, and so are the emotions stirred by the bittersweet finale. Rated: 3/4 Jul 28, 2016 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema Much like the work of Mark Twain, 'Microbe and Gasoline' is a warm and welcoming shade of rose-tinted glasses. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 3, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site This is not earth-shaking material, and Gondry has a tendency toward preciousness and self-consciousness, but in the current cinema world, small pleasures stand out. Feb 14, 2021 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture Microbe & Gasoline offers a fun little ride, even if its charms won't linger for very long in your rear-view.
