"Midnight Diner" has its faults, particularly regarding its duration and intense sentimentalism on occasion, but emerges as a very easy to watch, quite entertaining spectacle Go to Full Review

Though the release itself is bare bones, there's delicious, nutrient-rich content in the film itself, making for a robust meal all on its own. Go to Full Review

By missing out on character development and eschewing presentations of Shanghainese dishes, Midnight Diner fails to entertain both drama-philes and foodies. Go to Full Review

aya t @ayaueta Dec 1 Great personal stories from the chef's customers.(but gets more involved unlike tokyo version) plus mostly chinese dishes unlike the tokyo version, but he can actually cook u any dish u like as long as he has the ingredients. A couple of customers actually brought in hard to find meat, fish and/or produce for him to cook for them. Chef has traveled to 50 plus cities learning dishes in the world but his customers seem to prefer home cooked meals from their regional hometown that aren't available in shanghai. Based on a Japanese movie series, I like how it actually feels touches on realities very specific to Chinese modern culture , sometimes in a subtle way others as part of the many side stories portrait in the movie. The vignettes are all beautifully written and rendered. See more Read all reviews
